I have the Back-UPS ES725 and when my battery was two months short of being 4 years old (actually it was four years old but the date of the sale of the UPS was two months after the manufacture of the battery and APC was going by that), the PowerChute software suddenly stated that I had one week, 8 hours of battery backup. The moral of the story is buy a quality UPS in the first place, feed it good batteries, and it ought to last a long time. Unless the transient exceeds the design parameters of the circuit, these do not wear out and do not degrade. The better equipment uses a "transorb" - basically a back-to-back high voltage zener diode optimized for low breakover impedance and high instantaneous power capability. They're not really that good anyway due to their relatively high transient impedance. That's why the better UPSs and surge suppressors don't use them. It's true that MOVs wear out with repeated absorption of energetic spikes. Thus the dichotomy between self-test and real performance because an open circuit test tells you nothing about ESR and "wear" on the cells.
